China Tourist Visa and Visa-Free Entry: What to Check

The right entry route depends on your passport, the purpose of your visit and the countries on either side of China. Use this checklist before you buy a non-refundable ticket.

China entry rules are not one rule for every visitor. Start with four facts: the passport you will use, the reason for your visit, how long you plan to stay, and whether your journey enters China from one country and continues to another. A rule that works for a French passport may not work for a Canadian passport, and a transit arrangement is not the same as a tourist visa.

02

Check the route before you check the form

Some travellers may qualify for a unilateral visa-free arrangement, while others may qualify for transit without a visa. These policies have different conditions and can change by passport, date and route. The National Immigration Administration's current information on 240-hour transit describes an onward journey from one country or region through mainland China to a different country or region, with entry through an eligible port and travel inside the permitted area.

Do not treat a return flight to the country you came from as a third-country itinerary. Do not assume that a flight connection automatically qualifies. Check the exact arrival airport, departure airport, onward ticket, passport validity and permitted travel area with an official source and with your airline before departure.

If the visa-free or transit conditions do not fit, the normal route for a holiday is a tourist visa. Start with the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your place of residence and follow the application centre's current instructions. The application form, appointment process, photograph rules, fingerprints, fees and processing times differ by location.

Documents a tourist visa application commonly needs

The exact list belongs to the local visa centre, but a normal application may ask for:

  • a passport with sufficient validity and blank pages;

  • a completed online application form and a signed printout;

  • a compliant photograph;

  • evidence of flights or a travel plan;

  • accommodation information for the relevant nights;

  • supporting documents for the purpose and timing of the visit.

The itinerary must agree with the rest of the application. If the form says you arrive on one date but the flight arrives on another, the centre may ask you to correct it. If the trip includes Tibet, the permit process is separate from the visa and the itinerary should reflect the actual route.

04

Timing mistakes are easy to avoid

Do not apply before you understand the visa's validity, permitted entries and duration of stay. Do not leave the application until the week before departure, especially if an appointment or document correction is required. Leave time for a passport to be held by the centre and for a request for additional information.

Keep a digital and paper copy of the submitted form, booking references and passport information page. Carry the documents you may need at check-in and immigration even if the rule you are using is visa-free. The airline may check your onward ticket before boarding.

Where Manjing Travel fits

We can help you make the itinerary and accommodation documents consistent with the trip we are actually planning. We cannot decide whether a passport qualifies, replace an embassy or immigration authority, attend a personal appointment, or guarantee admission. For a tailored route, send us your passport nationality, intended dates, arrival city and departure country before you rely on a transit arrangement.

Check the latest official rule again shortly before departure. Entry policy is a live operational matter, not a permanent feature of a blog post.
