China High-Speed Trains: Booking and Boarding Guide
China's rail network is fast and practical, but the important work happens before the train moves: match the passport, choose the right station and arrive with time to spare.

01
High-speed rail is often the cleanest way to connect major Chinese cities. Stations are large, security checks happen before the waiting hall, and one city may have several stations with similar names. A good ticket plan is as much about identity and geography as it is about finding a departure time.
02
Book with the passport you will use
When booking your ticket, you must use the passport you will actually carry and present when traveling.Do not use an old passport to purchase the ticket, and do not bring a different passport to the station.
Passenger details must match the passport exactly.
When creating a passenger profile, the following information must match the passport exactly:
Name;
Nationality;
Passport number;
Date of birth.
Rules for Entering Names
Names are the area most prone to errors.
Please pay special attention to the following:
Do not abbreviate middle names;
Do not arbitrarily swap the order of the surname and given name;
Do not add or remove spaces on your own;
Do not use nicknames or abbreviations
Unless the booking system's instructions explicitly require you to adjust the format, you must enter the information exactly as it appears in your passport.
Select a ticket purchasing channel
You may use:
The official China Railway 12306 service;
Reputable booking platforms.
Avoid using untrusted third-party channels to prevent incorrect information or ticketing failures.
03
Ticket Sales Schedule, Ticket Release Times, and Strategies for Securing Tickets
Please refer to the current railway system display for ticket counter details and ticket release times.Do not rely solely on outdated guides or the past experiences of others.
Tickets for popular routes may sell out quickly around public holidays. If you are traveling during peak periods—such as the Spring Festival, National Day, or the May Day holiday—you should make preparations well in advance.
If tickets for your first choice are unavailable, you can check:
other nearby departure times;
different stations;
routes involving one reasonable transfer.
Do not book an itinerary with an overly tight transfer window.
Reasons:
Major stations are crowded;
Walking distances within the station can be long;
The preceding train might experience minor delays;
Security checks, ticket inspections, and locating the platform can all take time.
A transfer that is too tight could ruin your entire day's itinerary.
04
Read the station name twice
Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and other cities have multiple rail stations. The station on your ticket may be far from the hotel or from the airport. Save the Chinese station name and show it to the driver. Check the station again on the day of travel because a familiar city name does not mean a familiar building.
05
Departure date: Arrival time at the station
If you are taking a train in China for the first time, please arrive at the station approximately 45 to 60 minutes before departure.
Allow extra time if you are traveling during a holiday or visiting an unfamiliar station; large stations can involve long queues, security checks, and significant walking distances.
Why arrive early?
Because you need time to:
Enter the station;
Go through passport control;
Pass through security;
Find the waiting area;
Check the boarding gate;
Queue for ticket inspection;
Walk to the platform;
Locate your carriage and seat.
06
Station Entry, Security Check, and Waiting
Stations are usually large, and security checks generally take place before you enter the waiting area. So, don't think of the security check as the final step before boarding the train.
Information regarding the ticket gate is usually displayed in the waiting hall. Once inside, locate your specific train and confirm the corresponding gate. At large stations, the platform where you purchased your ticket may also indicate which zone your gate is located in. Upon arriving at the gate, take note of the ground markers corresponding to your high-speed train; this can make it easier to locate your specific carriage.

07
Ticket inspection, the platform, boarding, and finding a seat
Once ticket checks begin, please follow the crowd to the appropriate ticket gate. Your booking details will indicate which gate to use.
After entering the platform, follow the signs to locate your carriage. Do not simply follow the crowd; make sure to verify your specific carriage number.

Please check the carriage and seat details on your booking confirmation to ensure they match the platform signage.
You need to verify:
Train number;
Carriage number;
Seat number;
If you have any questions, please present your ticket to the railway staff.Avoid aimlessly searching on the platform just as the train is about to depart; doing so wastes valuable time.
08
How do I choose a seat class?
High-speed/Bullet Trains: Second Class
Second-class seats offer sufficient comfort for most intercity travel and typically have the highest ticket availability.
Suitable for:
General travel;
Short- to medium-distance intercity trips;
Budget-conscious passengers.

First Class
First Class offers:
More space;
A quieter carriage.
If you would like more comfort, consider First Class.
Business Class
Business Class is a premium offering.
For standard holiday routes, it is usually unnecessary to choose this option.

Overnight standard-speed trains: soft sleepers and hard sleepers.
Soft sleepers offer enclosed four-berth compartments.
Hard sleepers feature an open-plan layout with six berths.
Some high-speed train services also offer soft sleeper berths, which provide greater comfort but come at a higher price.
The keys to traveling by high-speed rail in China are: ensure your passport details are accurate, clearly check station names, allow ample time before departure, verify the train number, carriage, and seat, be able to handle your own luggage, and avoid booking tight connections.
